aisling mccallion
Aisling McCallion's work is influenced by the deconstruction of existing economic structures and the exploration of new systems to replace them. She often explores fashion as both object and action. Fashion is as much a vehicle for expressive storytelling as it is an impeccable model of the human and environmental casualty of the capitalist economy. Embracing social and circular ideologies, Aisling is often searching for a way to disrupt our relationship with a market-based system and redefine the role of empathy within our economy. McCallion graduated from the Limerick School of Art and Design (L.S.A.D), Ireland in 2017 with a first-class honours in Fashion, Knitwear and Textile Design. Since then she has worked as a technical knitwear designer, programmer, and mechanic with luxury menswear brand Inis Meáin Knitting Company. Gaining technical Shima Seiki training in Castle Donnington, Shima's European headquarters, Aisling was able to run, maintain and program the industrial knitting machines at the factory as well as contribute designs and undertake full garment development. Outside of industry, Aisling has exhibited at the inaugural spacecraft Artists' Studios Exhibition in Limerick City and at the Centre for Creative Arts Media, Galway, as part of the Galway Design Box and as part of the Knit and Stitch Show in the RDS Dublin. Aisling has interned at Sibling in London and with Edel MacBride in her native Donegal. As of July 2019, Aisling lives and works in Limerick, Ireland where she actively pursues her creative practice. Her interest in alternative economies has led to undertaking a minor award in the University of Limerick in Managing and Leading the Social Enterprise. Current projects include freelancing as a technical knitwear consultant for sustainable start up brands and ongoing collaborations with musicians living in the city.
